Shopify Scripts are retired. Your Playwright rules don’t have to be.
If you built discounts, shipping rules or payment rules with Playwright for Shopify Scripts, here’s what changed, what still works, and how to get your rules back into checkout.
What changed
Shopify stopped running Scripts created in Script Editor on June 30, 2026. Scripts no longer change prices, shipping options or payment options at checkout, on any plan.
Shopify replaced Scripts with Shopify Functions: small programs that run inside Shopify’s checkout. Every app that changed checkout with Scripts has had to move.
What we’ve kept running
Playwright for Scripts is still here. Your rules are saved, you can sign in and edit them, and Playwright still writes the script for each one.
Shopify won’t run those scripts any more, so the rules don’t affect orders until you move them to Shopify Functions.
Move to Playwright for Shopify Functions
We recommend every Scripts customer moves. It’s the new version of Playwright, with the same templates and conditions, and your rules come with you.
- Your rules come with you
- Everything you built for Scripts opens in the Functions version, ready to publish.
- Publish, don’t paste
- Rules go straight to Shopify checkout. There’s no code to copy into Script Editor.
- Checked before it goes live
- Playwright checks each rule against what Shopify Functions can do and tells you what to change.
- Same price
- One plan with every rule template, billed through Shopify.
How to move
- Enter your store’s address below and select Move to Shopify Functions.
- Approve the new permissions Shopify asks for: discounts, shipping and payment customizations, and checkout validation.
- Open your rules in Playwright. They’re already there.
- Select Publish. Playwright tells you about any rule that needs a change first.

What works differently on Shopify Functions
Most rules move as they are. Shopify Functions can’t see a few things Scripts could, so rules that use them need a change before they’re published:
- Whether a customer accepts marketing. Tag those customers and use a customer tag condition instead.
- Cart weight and line item properties.
- Comparing billing and shipping addresses.
- Where a shipping rate comes from (Shopify or a carrier). Select rates by name instead.
- Partial tag matches, like “tags containing VIP”. List the full tags instead.
A few things also look slightly different: renamed shipping rates show the carrier name first, an order gets one shipping discount, and Shopify doesn’t let apps rename or move wallets like Shop Pay, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
Discount code rules move too, and you no longer create the codes by hand: when you publish, Playwright creates every code your discount rules check for in Shopify. Shopify only accepts codes that exist, so for a wildcard or pattern like VIP-CLUB-**** list the exact codes in the rule, or create them in Shopify.
